PROHEART 6 MANUFACTURER
RECALL
On September 3, 2004, Fort Dodge Animal Health announced a voluntary
recall of Proheart6 heartworm preventative.
MAPLE VETERINARY HOSPITAL POSITION
Our doctors carefully evaluate each patient before prescribing Proheart6
heartworm prevention. Proheart6 is not given to dogs that have medical
problems that would result in Proheart6 being contraindicated for those
patients.
In response to the Fort Dodge Proheart6 recall,
Maple Veterinary Hospital has discontinued
administering Proheart 6 injections until further noticed.
For those patients who have received Proheart6 injections, the
doctors of Maple Veterinary Hospital advise the following:
If the FDA and Fort Dodge have not retracted the recall before your
pet's next scheduled Proheart6 injection, an alternative monthly
heartworm preventative will be prescribed for your pet.
Proheart6 has been administered to many of our patients over the past 3
years and we have not experienced any life-threatening adverse reactions
in any of our patients as a result of the Proheart6 injection.
We have had a rare report of a localized reaction at the injection site.
We consider this to be an adverse reaction to the medication and these
patients are given alternative heartworm prevention in the future.
If you have any concerns regarding your pet's health, please contact
us.
